At present budget restaurants are functioning in Chennai's 200 wards. Idli is sold for Re 1 and sambar and curd rice are sold for Rs. 3. Now similar budget restaurants will come up in Madurai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Salem, Tirupur, Tuticorin, Vellore and Erode. Every Municipal Corporation will have 10 restaurants each. These will be inaugurated by the month-end. The price will remain the same as it is in Chennai. The Chief Minister said following requests for including pongal and variety rice in the menu of the budget canteens in Chennai, the government will serve pongal and sambar in the morning and tamarind rice or curry leaf rice for lunch, for Rs. 5. The restaurants in Chennai will provide two chappathis and dhall or kurma for Rs. 3 in the evening from September.

Mission: The scheme requires the Municipal Corporations in the state, with the help of self-help groups, to establish canteens at multiple places in cities and sell subsidized food at very low prices.[2] The scheme opened canteens first in multiple areas in Chennai, and then in other regions of the state as well. The menu mainly includes traditional South Indian foods like Idli, Sambar Rice, Curd Rice, Pongal, Tamarind Rice and Curry-leaf Rice, and also Chapathi, a predominantly North Indian dish. The dishes are offered at very low prices - Re. 1 for an Idli, Rs. 3 for a plate of Sambar Rice or Curd Rice, etc. There are plans to make the canteens environment friendly by making them run partially solar powered.
