Tom Ka Gai or Coconut Chicken Soup is the milder, creamier cousin of Tom Yum. They almost have the same set of ingredients, except that Tom Ka has coconut milk in it, which is responsible for its creaminess. ?
Tom means to boil, Ka is galangal (a rhyzome that looks a lot like ginger, but on the cooler side and with a scent similar to a pine forest), and Gai is chicken. Galangal is obviously the main herb in this dish. But unlike Tom Yum, which gives quite a punch, the rest of the ingredients--the tanginess, the sweetness, the spice--are just harmoniously playing in the background. Mushrooms are also added which soak up all the creaminess and flavors of the soup. Simply delicious.
Tom Ka Gai is a classic, well-loved comfort food that you must try especially if you love Thai food. Best served with plain rice.
